The Fifth of May

This year, TJA will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with our annual benefit. Casino de Mayo is set to be a fabulous, festive event raising funds for scholarships for deserving USC junior and senior women. In some ways, by helping to provide these ladies with the financial freedom to complete their education, the benefit aligns with the original meaning of the holiday.

According to Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo "is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is called El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla). The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War."

There have been Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the United Sates for years, but official recognition came in 2005, when congress issued a concurrent resolution recognizing the significance of the day.

TJA Wants YOU!

Amidst all of the excitement planning our annual benefit to raise funds for TJA scholarships, we are also gearing up for recruitment for our fall open membership. Trojan Junior Auxiliary ladies are excited to welcome the class of 2012 into the USC Alumni Association. We are happy to share our mission of Friendship, Leadership, and Scholarship, and inform graduating women about how to stay connected and give back to the great University we all love.

Members of the TJA recruitment committee are reaching out through the Trojan Family to invite graduating seniors and all alumnae ten years or less out from graduation to join an invite list for our fall welcome mixer. Recent recruitment events included the USC Grad Fair, February 14th-16th, and the Alumnae ADPi event on April 1st.

In the coming weeks, TJA members will be speaking at the Helene's final meeting of the year, attending Senior SCend Off, participating in the Swim With Mike charity event, speaking at Sorority houses during Monday night deliveries, and reaching out to USC student groups for any senior ladies interested in learning more about Trojan Junior Auxiliary.

Save the date now for our annual Welcome Membership Mixer, Monday, August 13, 2012, at the Widney Alumni House. If you're interested in attending, please email membership@usctja.com to be added to the invite list.

Announcing ... Casino de Mayo!

It's official, the annual TJA benefit is less than a month away. The Casino de Mayo  gala will be held at TenTen Wilshire in Downtown LA on Saturday, May 5 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. and will feature a dinner, casino-‐style gaming, silent auction and opportunity drawing.

Guests will embark on an evening of authentic Mexican faire and fiesta set against a spectacular sunset view from the TenTen Wilshire rooftop, located at 1010 Wilshire Blvd, with USC’s premiere young alumnae group. They’ll also enjoy casino-‐style gaming, bid on silent auction items and enter to win opportunity drawings. Event tickets start from $60, and include a traditional Mexican buffet and gaming chips.

Auction items include: A week in the Caribbean, Turf Club admission to Santa Anita Racetrack, and a day at the CBS studios on the set of “The Price Is Right.” An opportunity drawing grand prize includes two adult one‐day Disneyland park‐hopper tickets.

Every $1,000 raised for scholarship is matched two-‐to-‐one by USC and directly benefits the outstanding women selected by TJA members to receive these prestigious scholarships.

“The annual Benefit is a wonderful Trojan Junior Auxiliary tradition, and our primary means of growing our scholarship fund,” said Ashley Harvel Cooper, TJA president. “By combining the festivities of Cinco de Mayo with this annual event and unique rooftop venue, our members and guests will enjoy beautiful views of the sunset and Downtown skyline while having fun and celebrating a great cause—all while embodying the Trojan spirit of giving back.”

New Benefits for Alumni

Did you know that as an alumna of USC you get exclusive benefits only available to the Trojan Family?

In the past few months, the Alumni Association has added several new companies to the growing list of business partners that provide discounts and services to alumni.

The latest company is a television cable provider called Connect Your Home. CYH has contracts with Dish Network, DirecTV, and Time Warner Cable. By working through Connect Your Home, they'll not only get you a great discounted price on your preferred provider, but also free premium movie channels, HD, DVR, a three month Blockbuster Home membership, and a $75 visa gift card to use as you please.

SafeMart is another recent addition. With SafeMart, Trojans get 15% off a wireless home security system that can be set up as new or wired to any former security device that was set up in your home in the past. What's better is that you can rest easy by controlling it from the web or your mobile device. SafeMart will also work with many insurance providers to give you an even better discount.

Other benefits include discounted car rental with Enterprise, insurance through Marsh and Liberty Mutual, test prep classes through Kaplan, and a friends and family rate through Shea Mortgage.

TJA Gives Back

Every year TJA supports the USC community raising funds for scholarships, but this year we've taken our service efforts one step farther.

In keeping with our focus on women, The Downtown Women's Center has received special support. The DWC's mission is "to provide permanent supportive housing and a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability, and to advocate ending homelessness for women.

In December TJA members donated needed items such as shirts, socks, gloves, shoes, new undergarments, tote bags, toothbrushes, deodorant, and hair brushes, which went directly to DWC for those in need. Here's a wish list if you'd like to support DWC with a donation today.

Last month as part of the first-ever USC Day of SCervice, members donated their time, helping out on a number of projects at DWC.

According to the USC Alumni Association, "The USC Alumni Day of SCervice is an opportunity for all alumni and friends to participate in local service volunteer projects organized by our USC alumni clubs, representatives and other affiliated groups worldwide." More than 1,500 alumni, parents, students and friends of USC participated, in 18 states and 9 nations.

The TJA at DWC effort was organized by Social Chair Dawn S. Here's what she had to say about her experience.

"Our group of 15 was originally scheduled to sort donations at the  Downtown Women's Center. Upon our arrival we learned DWC was short staffed in the kitchen so half of our group went to work there and half of us sorted donations. The kitchen group prepared lunch from scratch including salad, fruit salad, garlic bread, and lasagna. The sorting group sorted through donations from both clothing stores and individuals, sorting items by size to facilitate distribution to the women of DWC.

"Our shift was for two hours from 10:00am-12:00pm, although kitchen volunteers put in another half hour to help serve the lunch they prepared.

"I worked with the group sorting donations. After we finished our on site contact Kristen (a current USC grad student) gave us a tour of the facility. Learning more about the work done at the DWC and the growing need to serve the homeless women of Los Angeles was eye opening. When DWC started in the late '70s, only 5 percent of the homeless population was women. Today it is up to 30 percent and growing.  Yet DWC has managed to create hope in a place where it is often lost. Their beautifully renovated building provides a safe and welcoming environment. They have a beautiful outdoor space on the roof and even two lovely feline residents that I got to meet.

"Everyone is treated with great dignity and respect at DWC. It really struck me as I was leaving and one of the women said thank you as I was walking out of the parking lot. The genuine appreciation she had for the simple work I did that morning made me glad I selected this project. It made any efforts on my part to organize things entirely worth it."

In addition to efforts at DWC, TJA members also participated in a beach clean up and food drive in Seal Beach, Calif.

Save the date, SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2013 for next year's Day of SCervice.
