This year, TJA will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with our annual benefit. Casino de Mayo is set to be a fabulous, festive event raising funds for scholarships for deserving USC junior and senior women. In some ways, by helping to provide these ladies with the financial freedom to complete their education, the benefit aligns with the original meaning of the holiday.
According to Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo "is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla, where the holiday is called El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla (English: The Day of the Battle of Puebla). The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War."
There have been Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the United Sates for years, but official recognition came in 2005, when congress issued a concurrent resolution recognizing the significance of the day.
