Sleeper was named one of the Top 8 DJs on the planet in the 2006 World Turntable Championship for his ability to remix live and incorporate turntablism into his music. Dr. Jill Tarter: The Search for Cosmic Company
Dr. Jill Tarter, Astronomer and Director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, explains the technology and significance of NASA's Kepler, which detects when stars "blink" or a planet passes in front of it, and her role in SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. With the use of Kepler, Tarter tells us that there are probably about 50 billion planets in the Milky Way galaxy, of which 500 million are potentially habitable. So, she asks, are we alone? Tarter explains her research with SETI involving new ways to search for biosignatures around these planets that indicate extraterrestrial life. Watch Dr. Tarter's talk here.

Startup Weekend September 23-25
Startup Weekend is an intense 54-hour event, which focuses on building a web or mobile application that could form the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend. The weekend brings together people with different skill sets - primarily software developers, graphics designers and business people - to build applications and develop a commercial case around them.

Clifford Johnson, a USC professor of physics and astronomy, developed a new film competition to promote student collaboration across disciplines in order to communicate complex science concepts through different means. With the National Science Foundation grant Johnson received in 2008, the competition will launch this Fall, and the final screening and awards will take place in January. Teams must include one student from a science department, or the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, or the USC Keck School of Medicine, and at least one student from the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
Small Business Development Center Offers Workshops on Business Skills Next Event - September 22
The Small Business Development Center, hosted by the College of the Canyons, helps prospective and existing small business owners start new businesses, tackle current business challenges, and develop tools and methodologies to successfully manage and grow their business. This month, the SBDC is offering a hands-on workshop to help business owners increase their sales and implement a powerful selling program. The annual Amazon Web Services (AWS) Start-Up Challenge is currently accepting entries until October 2, 2011. Eligible start-ups that are using the AWS cloud computing platform can submit an entry which describes their business plan and use of AWS paid services, and could potentially win up to $100,000 in cash and AWS credits. Startup America, an organization working to help young companies grow in order to create jobs in America, announced that young companies can now register to become verified Startup American Firms and gain access to resources from more than 35 leading companies. Fourteen new partners, including Dell and LeadMaster, have added another $330 million of private-sector commitments offered by the Partnership. Find out how to become a Startup American Firm here.

USC Body Computing Conference September 23
The Conference will be held on September 23rd, 2011 at the Town & Gown banquet hall on the main USC campus and features the most influential figures in wireless health. The conference is run by USC's Center for Body Computing, a leading center for wireless medicine. The CBC's initiatives include working with the Institute for Communication Technology Management at the USC Marshall School of Business to study how mobile phones can be used in the prevention of illnesses and epidemics; studying the role of social media in healthcare; medical research (the CBC recently authored a study which followed more than 100,000 patients across the United States which found increased survival rates among remotely monitored patients with wireless-enabled devices); and sports (the National Football League has given an award to the Center for Body Computing to study the dynamic heart rate in NFL players).

USC Marshall Society and Business Lab welcomes Mr. Shaheen Sadeghi, CEO of LAB Holding and developer of The Camp, to discuss the business model behind Alternative Retail Development. The meeting is from 12:30p.m. to 1:50p.m. at USC. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP for the event.

Cardborigami, Inc., a non-profit start-up headed by USC Alumna Tina Hovsepian is a finalist in the Pepsi Refresh Challenge. Hovsepian was the 2nd place winner of the 2009 Undergraduate Research Symposium presented by the USC Stevens Institute, Cardborigami, Inc. aims to provide portable shelter for the homeless and disaster victims with treated cardboard that is both water and fire-proof. The Pepsi Refresh Challenge allows innovators to submit their ideas with a complete budget and plan in Arts & Music, Communities or Education for a chance to win a grant to fund their innovation. Sanguine Biosciences, started by USC alums Brian Neman and Sascha Hasan, is developing a proprietary DNA database providing researchers with immediate access to DNA sequences and associated medical records through a web-based, pay-to-access DNA and health record library. The company also provides high quality patient biospecimens that are collected through a new, multifaceted collection platform, used to develop biomarkers and biological drugs.
